Kyrenia, is a city on the northern coast of Cyprus with its miles of natural beaches, calm sea and mild climate. This city is bounded to the north by the sea and to the south by the mountain range. Kyrenia (Girne) has been host to a huge variety of civilizations over more than two thousand years.
Spectacular attractions of the city:
The most atmospheric place to dine in Kyrenia is the Old Harbour that is is known as the “Jewel of the Mediterranean”. it is full of yachts and fishing boats, shops, markets and local cafés, narrow cobbled alleys and an peaceful atmosphere. Although many of the restaurants depend on their setting rather than their menus to get you in the door, there are a couple of gems among the more mundane places. There are also some excellent restaurants in Kyrenia’s old Turkish Quarter.
Kyrenia Castle is located in Kyrenia Harbour. The castle, which dates back to the 16th century, was built by the Venetians. Inside the walls of the castle is a 12th century church. The interior of the castle includes a guard room, a prison, a courtyard and a royal ward in the west. In this royal part, large windows with small arches are well visible. At the bottom of the castle are dungeons and a food storage room. You will also find a small souvenir shop at the north end of the courtyard. There is a tomb, in the left of the castle entrance, which belongs to Siddiq Pasha, who conquered Kyrenia in 1570.
St. Hilarion Castle
St. Hilarion Castle is very beautiful, but climbing hundreds of stone steps to reach this castle is difficult. Of course, when you reach this castle, you forget all your tiredness. The view of Kyrenia from this height is very beautiful and spectacular. There are exhibitions, cafes and small shops near the castle for you to enjoy.
